||
|

|
While bird identification manuals include black-necked stilts in shorebirds, I have either grouped birds together more as I tend to find them, or per their correct categories. In the case of the stilts, I have them together with Ibis, so I am including them in this category. They are also linked to Gulls and Terns (shorebirds) section. |

This spoonbill had only landed on top of a branch at the top of the trees a few minutes before a great egret decided that he liked that particular branch. Since spoonbills are not aggresive, the egret obviously felt he could kick him off. But spoonbills are not as defenseless as most people (and some other birds) think they are. That rounded bill looks rather ineffective compared to the sword like beak and rapid thrusting attack of the great egret. However, the spoonbill can swing that bill rapidly from side to side and lunge with their body. The bill has nerve endings which can cause the bill to snap shut quite tight when the spoonbill detects prey in the water. This also makes the bill a very effective defensive weapon against any obnoxious egrets that may think they own the place. |

Spoonbills frequently perch on exposed, and flimsy branches. Unlike egrets, herons, and many other birds, this does not look like a comfortable and natural act. For instance, a great egret can perch on a tall thin branch, even in the wind, with such grace that you would almost think she was frozen there. Not with roseate spoonbills. They teeter around with all the grace of a drunken sailor, bobbing back and forth, sometimes staying stable, other times, falling off and flying down to another branch. Just imagine what you would look like (unless you're a high wire walker) on top of a precarious perch. That's what spoonbills look like on an unsable branch. This graceful looking pair of spoonbills was actually attempting to keep their balance on these branches. |
