1969 Porsche 917k #2
The Porsche 917 is one of the most famous racing cars of all time. This particular 917k is one of more noticeable of the 917’s in it’s dramatic Gulf sponsored blue and orange colors.
This historic car was driven to victory in the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona by Pedro Rodriquez, Leo Kinnunen, and Brian Redman, eclipsing the second place car, its teammates in another Gulf Porsche 917k (car #1) by 45 laps. It was not even close.
In an unusual event, Brian Redman drove both the #1 Porsche and the #2 (winning) Porsche 917k in the race. This event of a driver driving both team cars in an endurance race was copied in the movie Lemans with Steve McQueen driving two different 917’s under far more dire circumstances.
